Boston Celtics in the enviable position of standing pat at deadline with little risk

While there will always be fans jockeying for their favorite team to do more at each trade deadline than is necessary, a growing consensus among analysts is the Celtics do not need to do much (if anything) ahead of the Feb. 9 trade deadline.

Bleacher Report’s Dan Favale, for example, is among those who believe Boston ought to hold the line given a “backup big can be scooped up on the February buyout market, and their wing rotation isn’t exactly lacking even with Sam Hauser’s outside clip circling the drain.”

That is not to say the team can’t be improved on the wing or in big man depth via trade, but more so to suggest that while Boston can always get better, the need to make moves is not pressing.

“Brogdon and White can disappear for stretches on offense, but who are the Celtics bagging as superior alternatives?” asks Favale fairly.

As he notes, the Celtics have the ability to get into the conversation for a midrange salaried player if they think it can help the team but don’t need to if the cost is high or the fit even a little uncertain.

We are of the mind that the team should be looking for a player on the upper end of the wing spectrum able to play down to the 3 and up to 5 with some heft with some playoff experience, but those players rarely come cheap.

Over a barrel is far from where this Celtics team is as the deadline draws close, which is exactly where one wants to be as an ostensibly contending ball club.
