Nick Nurse addresses Sixers’ recent failures to get past Round 2 of playoffs

CAMDEN, N.J.–The Philadelphia 76ers have been one of the more successful teams in recent years as they have been able to win a lot of games, but they have yet to overcome the second round. They have fallen in the East semifinals in three consecutive seasons and five of the past six seasons overall.

Enter Nick Nurse who was tasked with taking over the Toronto Raptors in the 2018-19 season in somewhat similar situations. The Raptors were always a very good team, but they were unable to get over the hump in the East. Nurse, with some help, of course, guided the Raptors to a title in his first season.

Now, he will be tasked with getting the Sixers past Round 2 and unlocking what the Sixers can do.

“My first thought on that is this team could be playing tonight (Game 1 of the NBA Finals),” said Nurse. “I think that along with some others in the Eastern Conference probably are wishing they were getting to throw the ball up tonight. That combination of staying healthy, the ball bouncing your way, figuring out the long grind that it is to go from the start of the playoffs to winning a title, all those things are very difficult. You gotta be able to go through all that stuff.”

Nurse isn’t wrong. The Sixers have had some bad luck in the past when considering injuries to Joel Embiid as well as the ball bouncing their opponent’s way (such as in 2019 against Nurse’s Raptors). Luck is a part of any title run. Nurse and the Sixers will now be looking to create some of their own.

“I don’t really vibrate on the frequency of the past,” he added. “To me, when we get into a chance to start digging into this thing a little bit, it’s going to be only focused on what we’re trying to do going forward. It doesn’t matter. Whatever’s happened for the last how many whatever years, it doesn’t matter.”

Nurse then referenced his years in Toronto. The Raptors had some really good teams under the guidance of Dwane Casey. They were winning a lot of games, but they were just unable to get over the hump before Nurse took over the reins.
