Tyrese Maxey discusses offensive role for Sixers amid Joel Embiid injury

CAMDEN, N.J.–The Philadelphia 76ers are in the midst of playing wait-and-see when it comes to Joel Embiid’s status for Game 1 of the semifinals. They did get some good news when Trae Young bought him some more time with the semis set to begin on May 1.

With that being said, others have to step up in the place of Embiid should he miss any more time. Philadelphia has had success without the big fella during the season as they went 11-5 without him and they will have to lean on that success should he miss any time in the semifinals.

Tyrese Maxey, for example, has been a constant source of offense for this group. On the season, he averaged 20.3 points and 3.5 assists while shooting 43.4% from deep.

With Embiid out, Maxey might have to do more, but his preparation doesn’t change.

“I kinda prepare the same way,” said Maxey at practice on Wednesday. “Of course, if Joel is not playing, then I probably have a little bit of a bigger role, but at the end of the day, I think my role is pretty much the same in both ways which is to be aggressive, get myself shots, get my teammates shots, play good defense, and try to help us win games.”

Some may believe that Maxey will have to shoot the ball more and do more on the offensive end of the floor without Embiid, but he shoulders a lot of offensive responsibility even with the big fella on the floor. He had 33 points on 13-for-23 shooting in a Game 2 win over the Brooklyn Nets while Embiid was out there.

“I think in Game 2, I shot the ball over 20 times,” he added. “That was the most shot attempts of the series and that was with Jo so I don’t really think about it. I let the game come to me. I’ve always been that way. I’m not just hunting shots. I think I’m hunting opportunities to try and get my teammates an advantage or myself an advantage to score and try to create a high-quality shot.”

The Sixers were able to finish off a sweep of the Nets without Embiid. They could have easily laid down knowing Game 5 was going to be back in Philadelphia, but instead, they got the job done. That is what they will have to lean on as they move forward.
