Former Florida State men’s basketball guard Matthew Cleveland transfers to Miami

71 days after breaking the hearts of Miami fans on a last-second buzzer beater, Matthew Cleveland is now a Hurricane.

The former Florida State men’s basketball guard announced Sunday he had committed to Miami.

Cleveland entered the transfer portal in early April following the Seminoles 9-23 finish to 2022-23 season, which was the worst in program history.

In that stretch, Cleveland scored 13.8 points per game and was second in rebounding with 7.4 pulldowns per game. He was 45 percent from the field, 35 percent from 3-point range, and 69 percent from the charity stripe.

The transfer comes after Cleveland threw down 20 points, including a buzzer-beating game-winner against the Hurricanes, giving FSU a narrow 85-84 win. It also saw the Seminoles down 54-31 at halftime, with a less than 1 percent chance to win.

Later that season, Miami went on a run to make an appearance in the Final Four, eventually losing to national champion Connecticut, 72-69.

Cleveland was the third Seminole to enter the transfer portal this offseason alongside sophomore center Naheem McLeod and junior guard Caleb Mills.

Forward Baba Miller announced in April that he intends to return to the Seminoles for his sophomore season.

The Seminoles announced the additions of Georgetown guard Primo Spears, La Salle guard Josh Nickelberry, and VCU forward Jamir Watkins through the transfer portal, as well as assistant coach Kevin Nickelberry.
