Boston’s Joe Mazzulla admits he ‘should have called’ a timeout at the end of Game 4

The debate over whether Boston Celtics head coach Joe Mazzulla should have called a timeout at the end of Game 4 vs. the Philadelphia 76ers on Sunday is a contentious one, but the man at the center of it admitted that he ought to have called a timeout during media availability on Monday.

“I trust our guys to make the right play,” said Mazzulla to the press via CLNS Media. “Preventing the team from getting matchups off of the floor, preventing a team from getting their defense organized and hindsight’s always 20/20. So it sounds good to say, ‘Yes, we should have done this’, but we prepared all year to take advantage of those situations. More times than not, it worked out for us.”

“I thought at the end of regulation it worked out, ” he added. “We got the last shot, which is what you want. You don’t want to give them an opportunity.”

“At the end of overtime, hindsight’s 20/20, I should have called it to help us get a two-for-one or get a couple more possessions,” he explained.

“And so with 14 seconds left down one, you want to get as many chances as you can, so (we’ll) definitely learn from that.”
