Sixers seeing Tyrese Maxey continue to get back to himself vs. Celtics

BOSTON–The Philadelphia 76ers are back on the road on Tuesday to take on the Boston Celtics in Game 5 of this semifinal series. In order to get it done, they will need their stars to step up on the road in a tough environment.

Tyrese Maxey has had his issues in this series as he’s shooting just 36.6% from the floor and 28.6% from deep. However, there was a big positive that came out of their Game 4 win on Sunday.

While Maxey scored only 14 points on 6-for-17 shooting, there was an obvious willingness to attack the basket and get downhill on the part of the young guard.

“He did it more,” coach Doc Rivers said. “We came out of a couple timeouts with execution sets. The first play in overtime was the slip play we run and he got all the way down to the basket. We ran it earlier, he got to the basket, swung it out, swung, swung so we ran that, we got some action.”

For Maxey to be effective on offense, he has to not only get the ball in his hands, but also has to get downhill and be aggressive. That is when he has to use his speed and be able to attack.

On the flip side, Rivers doesn’t want Maxey forcing things against this Celtics team. They have a lot of elite defenders and rim protectors and that is when he has to decide whether to pass the ball out or not.

“He had some tough attacks that we wanna show him just because you’re driving in the paint doesn’t mean you can’t kick it out,” Rivers added. “They blocked it a couple times, I thought that ball should’ve come out, but he’s young and we know that. We’re just trying to teach him.”

Maxey is going to play a big role in whatever the Sixers do going forward. There will be a lot of pressure on the young man to help Joel Embiid and James Harden on the offensive end.
