With the Boston Celtics taking a violent downshift into offseason mode after losing Game 7 of the 2023 East finals to the Miami Heat, one of the first questions Jayson Tatum got from the press was how important he thought it was to get teammate Jaylen Brown extended by the Celtics. “That’s extremely important,” replied Tatum to the query. “He’s one of the best players in this league.”
“He plays both ends of the ball and is still relatively young, and he’s accomplished a lot so far in his career, so I think it’s extremely important,” added the St. Louis native for emphasis.
Brown, for his part, is eligible for what is being projected by HoopsHype’s Yossi Gozlan as a five-year, $285.6 million extension that some fans and media alike began questioning the wisdom of in the wake of the loss.
The Celtics may make moves to solve such a situation should they feel less than confident such a move makes sense for both sides. But, it seems at present more likely than not that Boston will extend Brown and decide how to proceed once they get the Georgia native on a longer-term deal.
Particularly with recent reporting from ESPN’s Brian Windhorst suggesting both the Celtics front office and Brown’s camp are interested in getting a deal done.
