Bulls re-signing White, Dosunmu, or Beverley isn’t ‘nearly enough’

Two years ago, the Chicago Bulls made a major shift in their philosophy. Instead of continuing their rebuilding and cultivating young talent, they decided to push their chips onto the table and attempt to push for the postseason. Since then, they’ve gone 1-for-2 on playoff appearances, taking a step back this year and missing out.

Losing Lonzo Ball to a potentially career-ending injury has been brutal, and the Bulls have yet to replace his production at the point guard position. Zach Buckley of Bleacher Report recently discussed Chicago’s top needs this summer, noting that they need a floor general to help replace Ball.

However, he also made it clear that re-singing a combination of Coby White, Ayo Dosunmu, and Patrick Beverley won’t be enough to solve Chicago’s problems.

“Regardless of what Ball’s future holds, though, Chicago clearly needs to make other plans at point guard,” Buckley wrote. “And no, re-signing any combination of Coby White, Ayo Dosunmu and Patrick Beverley wouldn’t be nearly enough.”

Buckley also noted that the core of Zach LaVine, DeMar DeRozan, and Nikola Vucevic needs a point guard to set things up for them.

“Assuming the Bulls plan to bring back Vučević, Zach LaVine and DeMar DeRozan, their roster puts significant and specific demands on their point guard,” wrote Buckley. “That player must be able to balance touches between the stars, maintain value off the ball, hold his own defensively (ideally at multiple spots) and push the tempo to find a few easy buckets when possible.”

Whether it be through free agency or the trade market, the Bulls need to add some point guard help this offseason.
