Mock trade has Nets trading Joe Harris and Patty Mills for John Collins

The Brooklyn Nets, like every other team that’s not playing right now in the NBA Finals, are thinking of ways to get better with the draft less than three weeks away. In this downtime between now and the draft, there have been mock trades that have been proposed throughout the internet.

For the Nets, trying to win now is probably their better option as opposed to rebuilding since the Houston Rockets own Brooklyn’s draft for the next few seasons. Various people within the NBA space have suggested that it’s better for the Nets to win as much as they can now since rebuilding wouldn’t benefit them much right now.

The mock trades involving the Nets have been deals in which Brooklyn gets a star-level player at the least in exchange for a valuable player like Mikal Bridges or restricted free-agent Cam Johnson. However, in this mock trade proposed by Greg Swartz of Bleacher Report, Brooklyn trades a couple of players for a guy who’s not very well-regarded right now:

The Mock Trade:

Brooklyn Nets receive: John Collins

Atlanta Hawks receive: Joe Harris and Patty Mills

Should the Nets do this trade?

While Collins did not look good this past season for the Hawks as he appeared to be miscast as a stretch-four type of player next to center Clint Capela. Collins had arguably his worst season since his rookie season, but there is room for optimism.

Collins is a career 35.6% shooter from three-point land and while that isn’t particularly impressive on its face, that figure ranks Collins ahead of Dorian Finney-Smith and Spencer Dinwiddie. Not to mention that in three of Collins’ last four seasons in the NBA, he has shot the three-ball at 36.4% or better.

While Harris and Mills are good shooters in their own right, Harris is owed $19.9 million for 2023-24 and he most likely will be in a bench role. Mills was essentially out of the rotation towards the second half of the season. To trade both of those guys for a player in Collins who adds frontcourt depth as well as versatility seems like an beneficial trade for Brooklyn.

Verdict: Yes, the Nets should do this trade.
