‘Easy piece to go get’

As the Chicago Bulls look to improve their roster this summer, there are some huge areas of need they need to address. Lonzo Ball‘s injury means they could use a point guard, they need extra forward depth, but most of all, Chicago needs to add three-point shooting.

This past season, the Bulls were one of the worst three-point shooting teams in the league. They were the only team in the league that attempted fewer than 30 threes per game (28.9). And in the modern-day NBA, teams need guys who can shoot the three-ball. During an appearance on NBC Sports Chicago’s “Bulls Talk” podcast, Darnell Mayberry of The Athletic suggested a potential three-point shooter as a trade target.

Mayberry brought up the idea of Chicago trading for Philadelphia 76ers wing Furkan Korkmaz, who has fallen out of favor in their rotation, but is a solid three-point shooter.

“The guy’s just wasting away on the bench,” Mayberry said. “He’s 25 years old, he only makes about $5 million next year. I feel like that’s just an easy piece to go get. And he kills the Bulls, so maybe coming to the United Center will make him feel right at home.”

After playing 19 or more minutes per game in each of the prior three seasons, Furkan’s playing time dropped to just 9.5 minutes per contest this past year. A big part of that was due to his three-point struggles in the 2021-22 season.

However, this past year, he shot 39.1 percent from distance on 1.2 three-point attempts per game. At his peak, in the 2019-20 season, Korkmaz shot 40.2 percent from deep on 4.9 three-point attempts per game.

It could be worth it for Chicago to take a chance on Korkmaz.
