On the heels of an outstanding college career, J.T. Shumate now will have an opportunity to play basketball at the highest level.

The Newark graduate makes his debut Friday in the NBA Summer League as a part of the Toronto Raptors. Shumate and the Raptors play the Chicago Bulls at 6:30 p.m. in Las Vegas in a game broadcast on NBA TV.

Shumate, a Division I All-Ohioan in 2018 for Newark, was a two-year standout at Walsh University before playing three outstanding seasons at the University of Toledo. He was named to the Mid-American Conference first team last winter, leading the Rockets to the MAC regular season championship.

Newark graduate J.T. Shumate, who starred at Toledo, will play for the Toronto Raptors during the NBA Summer League in Las Vegas, which begins Friday.

Shumate averaged 16 points and nearly five rebounds per game last season and was one of the most efficient players in the country. He shot 54% from the field, 40% from 3-point range and 87% from the foul line.

Toronto plays Cleveland at 3:30 p.m. Sunday in a game again scheduled for NBA TV. The Raptors’ final two preliminary games will be broadcast on ESPN2 at 6 p.m. Wednesday against Detroit and 5 p.m. July 13 against Brooklyn.
