Charles Balentine beat Michael Jordan.
On Sunday, Feb. 12, 1984, an unranked Arkansas team hosted No. 1 North Carolina in Pine Bluff, a Tar Heels that featured one Michael Jordan. But on that day, Balentine’s bucket with four seconds left, lifted the Hogs, 65-64.
Balentine died earlier in the week at age 60.
Long-time Arkansas sports reporter and Balentine’s close friend, Dudley Dawson, announced Balentine’s passing on social media. The two went to high school together at Newport.
“It is with a heavy heart and the family’s permission that I acknowledge that my best friend Charles Balentine passed away today at the age of 60,” Dawson wrote.
The Newport native played in 104 games with the Razorbacks from 1981-95. He averaged 7.9 points and 3.8 rebounds a game and was drafted by the Sacramento Kings in the 1985 NBA Draft.
Balentine was inducted to the Arkansas Hall of Honor in 2013 and was a member of the Newport Alumni Hall of Fame, as well.
