JAKE FISCHER: The news out of Minneapolis this morning is that Karl Anthony Towns is now out indefinitely with a torn meniscus, a pretty devastating blow to one of the best stories in the season. The young/kind of old/ where are they in a timeline Minnesota Timberwolves, where a lot of the timeline stuff is really just through the lens of, this team needs to win now.

DAN DEVINE: And for this to be the way that the things break for them a little over a month before the playoffs start, when they are in a dogfight for the number one seed in the West and playoff positioning, with the Thunder right there, the Nuggets right there, it’s so tightly packed and this is just such a monster blow in what has been a dream season for the Wolves. This is why you keep Naz Reid around. This is why you bring him back, even though you’re spending so much money on your bigs. He’s been an extremely important part of that rotation all season long.

And the numbers bear out his effectiveness in moments where they have not had Karl Anthony Towns. But then there’s the downstream effects of this. If Naz Reid is no longer your sixth man, if he’s your starter, then where are you getting the juice off the bench? There’s a lot to figure out. And I would imagine, in Minnesota, they’re scrambling, because this is some really, really bad news to get this close to the postseason.
