The moment has arrived: San Diego State has been patiently waiting for a rematch against UConn, who knocked San Diego State out of the NCAA Playoffs the last time they met. Now is their chance for payback. A Sweet Sixteen matchup is on tap on Thursday as the San Diego State Aztecs and the UConn Huskies will duke it out at 7:39 p.m. ET at TD Garden. We saw both of these teams recently pull out wins they weren’t expected to get, so we’ll see who gives it right back.
Winning is just a little bit easier when your shooting is a whole 15.7% better than the opposition, a fact San Diego State proved on Sunday. They blew past Yale, posting a 85-57 win on the road. With the Aztecs ahead 45-21 at the half, the contest was all but over already.
San Diego State relied on the efforts of Darrion Trammell, who scored 18 points along with five rebounds and three steals, and Jaedon LeDee, who almost dropped a double-double on 26 points and nine rebounds. Trammell didn’t help San Diego State’s cause all that much against UAB on Friday but the same can’t be said for this match.
Meanwhile, UConn came tearing into Sunday’s matchup with eight straight wins (a stretch where they outscored their opponents by an average of 20.3 points) and they left with even more momentum. They strolled past Northwestern with points to spare, taking the game 75-58.
UConn relied on the efforts of Tristen Newton, who dropped a double-double on 20 points and ten assists, and Donovan Clingan, who dropped a double-double on 14 points and 14 rebounds. Cam Spencer was another key contributor, scoring 11 points along with three steals.
San Diego State is on a roll lately: they’ve won four of their last five matches, which provided a nice bump to their 26-10 record this season. As for UConn, their victory…
