First-year player leaves Sycamore basketball after weekend incident

After a short time with the Indiana State Sycamores men’s basketball team, first-year forward Bobby Cannon has left the program, according to the university.

Cannon was arrested Sunday, July 28, by ISU Police. He was charged with domestic battery, a Class A misdemeanor, according to a Vigo County Superior Court Division 4 probable cause affidavit.

Cannon, a native of Winston-Salem, N.C., appeared in the Division 4 court Monday and was released on his own recognizance. A no-contact order with the alleged victim was included in a resulting court order, signed by Judge Chris Newton.

ISU Police had responded to a call at RiverFront Lofts at 12:41 p.m. Sunday. Cannon was booked at 1:16 p.m. A plea-or-resolution hearing in the case is scheduled for Jan. 30, 2025, according to a court official.

When asked about Cannon’s status with the ISU program on Friday afternoon, the university athletics department issued a statement saying, “Indiana State men’s basketball incoming freshman Bobby Cannon has decided to voluntarily withdraw from the Sycamore men’s basketball program to pursue other opportunities.”

Cannon was one of nine new players recruited by first-year Sycamore head coach Matthew Graves, as ISU rebuilds following the departure of a majority of the players and former head coach Josh Schertz after a 32-7 record last season. Schertz is now leading the Saint Louis University program and several of his former ISU players transferred to programs around the country via the NCAA portal.

Cannon, a 6-foot-10, 185-pound forward, averaged 17.1 points, 7.1 rebounds and two blocks as a high school senior with Forsyth Country Day in Lewisville, N.C. In addition to Country Day, Cannon played at Quality Education Academy in North Carolina.

Cannon originally committed last year to the University of New Orleans, then coached by Mark Slessinger, who is now an ISU assistant coach under Graves.
