Bill Self says David Coit could bring Kansas basketball a ‘whole different dimension’

LAWRENCE — Kansas basketball officially announced the addition of Northern Illinois transfer David Coit on Monday.

Coit, who’ll make the jump from the Mid-American Conference to the Big 12 Conference, will be a senior guard for the Jayhawks this season. Listed at 5-foot-11 and 175 pounds, he’s a multiple time All-MAC honoree. Considering Kansas’ depth was affected by the injury to sophomore guard Elmarko Jackson, Coit’s arrival is an important one.

Then with Northern Illinois, guard David Coit (11) goes to the basket as Iowa guard Brock Harding (2) defends during the first half of a Dec. 29, 2023 game in Iowa City, Iowa.

“David can shoot; he has range,” Self said in a KU release. “He’s a player who can score the basketball. He averaged 21 points this past year at Northern Illinois. I see him as a guy that gives us a whole different dimension that we may not have had he not signed with us.”

Kansas basketball is not just a favorite to win the Big 12 this season, but to win a national championship. It returns starters such as graduate center Hunter Dickinson, graduate guard Dajuan Harris Jr. and senior forward KJ Adams Jr. It’s added talent such as junior guard AJ Storr (Wisconsin), junior guard Rylan Griffen (Alabama) and senior guard Zeke Mayo (South Dakota State) through the transfer portal.

Jayhawks fans will be able to catch a glimpse of this team during Late Night in the Phog in mid-October, before an exhibition at home later that month against Washburn. The regular season opener is Nov. 4 at home against Howard. Not long after that, is a Nov. 8 game at home against North Carolina.
