Maryland, Virginia to renew men’s basketball rivalry starting in 2025

Maryland and Virginia will resume a men’s basketball rivalry next season that began when they were charter members of the Atlantic Coast Conference, the schools announced Wednesday afternoon.

The Terps and Cavaliers will meet annually through the 2028-29 season with matchups in Charlottesville in 2025-26 and 2027-28 and at Xfinity Center in College Park in 2026-27 and 2028-29.

Maryland and Virginia have played 184 games in their series, and the Terps lead the all-time series 108-76. The rivalry started in 1913 and was played every year between 1924 and 2014 (except for the 1939-40 season).

Maryland’s 75-69 overtime win against the Cavaliers on March 9, 2014, marked the Terps’ final regular-season game as a member of the ACC.

“Maryland and Virginia have a long basketball history and we’re excited to bring this series back to life,” Terps coach Kevin Willard said in a statement. “Looking ahead, I think it means a lot to our fan base to have our historic rivalries rekindled between Georgetown and now Virginia which has been outstanding under Coach [Tony] Bennett.”

Said Bennett in the same statement: “I greatly respect Coach Willard and what he’s doing there. We’ve played some exciting games against Maryland in the past, and we’re looking forward to a highly competitive series.”

The Terps and Cavaliers last met on Nov. 28, 2018, as part of the ACC/Big Ten Challenge at Xfinity Center. Virginia won, 76-71, and has triumphed in eight of the past nine matchups.

Despite their long and contentious history, the two programs have never clashed in the NCAA Tournament. They have won four games each in the ACC Tournament.

Wednesday’s announcement was the second this year involving a future nonconference series. Maryland and Georgetown will renew a four-year series next winter, and the Terps will participate in a home-and-home with Marquette this season and next.
