Derrick Rose, who spent parts of four seasons with Knicks, announces retirement from NBA

Derrick Rose, a former No. 1 overall pick who spent parts of four seasons with the Knicks, has announced his retirement from the NBA after 15 pro seasons.

Rose announced his retirement via his Instagram account.

The top pick out of Memphis in 2008, Rose burst onto the scene with the Chicago Bulls, winning Rookie of the Year in 2008-09 and MVP in 2010-11. A devastating knee injury forced him to miss the entire 2012-13 season, and he was traded to the Knicks in June of 2016.

While Rose was a starter during his first stint in New York, averaging 18.0 points and 4.4 assists, he returned to the Knicks as a key bench player and veteran presence under head coach Tom Thibodeau in February 2021, and would spend two and a half more seasons with the club.

Rose then played his final season with Memphis in 2023-24, appearing in 24 games while averaging 8.0 points and 3.3 assists. The Chicago native finished with career averages of 17.4 points, 5.2 assists, and 3.2 rebounds while making three All-Star teams.
