Can the FGCU men’s basketball team win the ASUN in 2024? Best-case scenario for the Eagles

The Florida Gulf Coast University men’s basketball team has had high expectations since their magical Sweet Sixteen run in 2013.

Since then, the Eagles have gone 201-151 (.571) as a program and are on their third head coach since Andy Enfield left after the 2013 season. Under Michael Fly and Pat Chambers, FGCU sits at just 87-93 (.483).

The return of talent the Eagles have should make them a contender, as the quartet of Keeshawn Kellman, Dallion Johnson, Rahmir Barno, and Jevin Muniz make FGCU an interesting follow this season.

The Eagles find themselves with a fanbase longing for a change in results, and a return to what was taking place during much of the 2010s, which included multiple 20-win seasons and NCAA Tournament berths.

The Royals have knocked FGCU out in the first round in each of the last two seasons, ending the Eagles’ seasons prematurely. The Eagles have been one-and-done in conference play in four of the last six seasons, something that they’ll look to change in Chambers’ third season.

Three bold predictions: For FGCU men’s basketball heading into 2024-25 season

Be on the other side of single-digit games, and beat inferior programs decisively

Last season under Chambers, the Eagles were 3-7 in one-score conference matchups, compared to 7-12 against their full schedule. In the ASUN, that included one-point losses to Stetson and North Alabama, and back-to-back three-point losses to Queens (N.C.) and Kennesaw State. On the other hand, FGCU played in a…
