Missouri State basketball vs Butler: Scouting report, prediction for opening night

Cuonzo Martin will make his first official return to the Missouri State basketball sideline when the 2024-25 season tips off on Monday evening in Indianapolis.

Missouri State will open its season at Butler when the two tip off at 5:45 p.m. at Hinkle Fieldhouse. The game will be televised nationally on Fox Sports 1.

The Bears are coming off a 17-16 season that resulted in the firing of former head coach Dana Ford. The school hired Martin, who served as MSU’s coach from 2008-11, who spent the last two years out of coaching after being fired at Missouri. Martin has 15 newcomers on the roster.

Butler went 18-15 last season, including a 9-11 finish in Big East play. The Bulldogs are coached by Thad Matta, who is in his second stint with the program after head coaching stops at Xavier and Ohio State.

Pierre Brooks, a former Michigan State transfer, is the one to watch after scoring in double digits in all but for games last year. He’s a 6-foot-6, 240-pounder who can score from anywhere and has NBA capabilities. Jahmyl Telfort is a fifth-year forward who can do a little bit of everything for the Bulldogs. Keep an eye on Andre Screen, a 7-foot-1 post, when the Bears are likely to try and feed 6-foot-4 Michael Osei-Bonsu down low frequently.

The group also added Patrick McCaffery, who was a 1,000-point scorer at Iowa.

Thad Matta is in his second stint as Butler basketball’s head coach
