Former WI Gov. Tommy Thompson on the life of MU President Mike Lovell

Former Wisconsin Gov. Tommy Thompson talks about the life of his friend, Marquette President Mike Lovell

Before the Marquette men’s basketball team rolled to a 102-62 victory over Stony Brook in its season opener on Monday, there was a video tribute and a moment of silence for former MU president Michael Lovell.

Lovell died in June at 57 after a three-year battle with sarcoma.

The Golden Eagles – and all MU athletic teams – will continue to honor Lovell this season with a patch on their uniforms.

The blue patch features “Lovell 24” in gold along with golden sunflower petals.

According to the university, sunflowers are a symbol of sarcoma awareness. After Lovell died, the school planted sunflowers across the campus in his memory.

Lovell was an avid fan of MU’s basketball team and was a fixture at most of the school’s athletic contests. Lovell also had a close and unique bond with men’s basketball coach Shaka Smart.
