North Carolina takes down Elon in the team’s first game of the season, but it was anything but easy as North Carolina was down late.
It was a back-and-forth game at the start. Both teams were hitting shots, mainly from behind the arc. However, North Carolina did enjoy a 12-point lead heading into the halftime break, with Seth Trimble and Jae’Lyn Withers hitting double figures with 12 and 10 points, respectively, in the half.
The lead grew into the second half with the Tar Heels leading by as many as 13 over the course of the first 10 minutes of the second half. With just 14 minutes left in the game, North Carolina was up 62-49.
However, just three minutes later, it was tied, and North Carolina even trailed for a little with only 10 minutes remaining. During most of that crumbled lead, the reigning ACC Player of the Year, RJ Davis was on the bench.
Davis came back into the game with just under seven minutes left in the game, and UNC was down by two points. He immediately stopped Elon’s momentum by making a running jumper in the lane.
On the next possession, RJ Davis gave the Tar Heels the lead with a 23-foot three-pointer. He went on to start a 16-2 run that led the team to go back up by double-digit points and eventually win 90-76.
Davis finished the game with 24 points, seven rebounds, and seven assists in the team’s first win of the year.
