South Georgia Tech drops two games in Florida tournament

Niceville, FL – The South Georgia Technical College Jets suffered two losses in the Northwest Florida Classic Tournament in Niceville, FL, over the weekend to drop to 0 – 2 in the opening of the 2024 – 2025 basketball season. The Jets fell to Southern Union Community College, 95 – 87 Friday, and then Northwest Florida overpowered the Jets 102 – 54 on Saturday.

The young Jets were down 44 – 37 at the end of the first half and it was hard to cut that deficit in the second half. Freshman center Matija Vucic of Belgrade, Serbia had a good night for the Jets with 17 points, six rebounds and one blocked shot to lead them in scoring. Freshman Zhian Briggs from Augusta, GA, and sophomore guard Daryl Bod from Paris, France, both walked away with 15 points in that match-up and then freshman forward Dwight Brown from Conyers, GA, closed out the double-digit scoring with 13 points.

Sophomore guard Vaughn Prosser from Sydney, Australia, tossed in nine points and led the team in rebounds with seven. Aiden Fitzgerald added six points, Jayden Simmons, 4; Jordon Dickson, 3; and Darius Willis and Matt Mbole closed out the scoring with two points each.

In the second game of the tournament, the Jets only shot 37.5% from the floor, 22.2% from the three-point line and 20% from the foul line to drop a 102 – 54 decision to Northwest Florida. Northwest Florida hit 60% of their shots from the field, 45% of their three pointers and 100 percent of their free throws.

Sophomore Daryl Bod was the top scorer for the Jets with 12 points and he was paced byAiden freshman Fitzgerald of Perth Australia who came off the bench to toss in 11 points. Matija Vucic came away with seven points. Babacar Diop, Dwight Brown and Zhian Briggs had six points each for the Jets, Vaughn Prosser added four and Jordon Dickson closed out the scoring with two points.

The Jets will try to get back on the winning track November 6, 7, and 8 at the Shelton State Classic in Tuscaloosa, AL. They will face Gadsden State…
