Will Jonas Aidoo play in season opener for Arkansas basketball? Here’s what we know

FAYETTEVILLE — Arkansas basketball is waiting for more information before determining Jonas Aidoo’s status for the season opener against Lipscomb.

Aidoo did not play in either of the Razorbacks’ preseason scrimmages as he recovers from an undisclosed injury. Arkansas assistant coach Chuck Martin said the Hogs are pleased with Aidoo’s progress, but no decision has been made if he will be available to face the Bisons Wednesday (7 p.m., SEC+).

“He’s getting better. He’s getting better. We’re taking it day by day,” Martin said. “We’ll have a better feel hopefully by tomorrow morning. But he’s certainly getting better. We’re excited about the possibility of him returning soon.”

During the pregame radio show prior to the TCU exhibition, Arkansas basketball play-by-play announcer Chuck Barrett said that Razorback Sports Network expects Aidoo to be available for the season opener.

Zvonimir Ivišić started each of the exhibitions, with Trevon Brazile coming off the bench. Both players can stretch the floor with their shooting, but Aidoo provides an extra element of physicality to the frontcourt.

He was part of the SEC’s All-Defensive Team last year while at Tennessee, averaging 11.4 points, 7.3 rebounds and 1.8 blocks per game.

After Lipscomb, Arkansas heads to Dallas Saturday to face No. 8 Baylor. The Bears got thrashed by Gonzaga 101-63 Monday night.

The Hogs will want Aidoo back for that game and an intriguing matchup against Baylor center Norchad Omier.
