Auburn basketball flight forced to return after player altercation | Reports

Multiple newsrooms reported Friday evening that the plane carrying the Auburn men’s basketball team to Houston for a Saturday game had to return to Alabama after an altercation between players on the Auburn team.

Jonathan Hardison of television station WBRC in Birmingham, and Jeff Goodman of Field of 68 said that the team’s plane was required to turn around. Hardison cited Air Traffic Control audio that was obtained by his station.

In a post on the social media site X, Hardison wrote that the audio included, “a pilot in that airspace telling ATC ‘we have a bunch of basketball players fighting.'”

Goodman’s post on the same site called the incident “horseplay,” and said the team planned to take another flight to Houston later Friday.

Auburn is currently ranked No. 11 in the country in the first USA TODAY coaches’ poll of the season, while Houston is ranked No. 4. The teams’ early-season matchup is scheduled for the Toyota Center in Houston, home of the NBA’s Rockets.

Both teams are 1-0 after winning their openers earlier this week.
