Hoya Happenings: Fairfield
It was a 69-57 Georgetown win over visiting Fairfield, Saturday, the first 2024-25 one at their typical Capital One Arena home. G’town, coached by HC Ed Cooley, are now 2-0 on the season, while Fairfield’s Chris Casey sees his Stags 0-2.

Uneven Defense
For much of the first half, Fairfield was rolling offensively. During that 20 minute span, the Hoyas found themselves down by as much as eight points, even being behind six with just under nine minutes before regulation.
To Cooley’s charges’ credit, they ended the stanza up 36-33, work translating into a 19-10 run.
“They hit a lot of tough shots in the first half” said Cooley during his team’s presser. “i don’t like our energy. I didn’t like our defensive intensity in the fist half”.
Skip past intermission, it’s was a different ball game, with the coach opining. “I thought our defense in the second half was elite’. In his summation, i thought our guys the second half, I thought our defense was elite. I thought our guys had a different purpose, a different edge, a different physicality”.
What do the numbers say?
Casey’s Stags went 38.71% from the floor during first half play, and a whopping 50% on three balls. Contrast that with 27.59% overall during the last 20 minutes, 12.5 (8-22) beyond the arch.
Cooley, who noted the turnaround was not a scheme based, but moored in want to and it’s a good thing, as “i thought we made a major jump defensively between the first game and the last 25 minutes. That’s something we will need to hang our hat on, as there are days when the ball just doesn’t go in the basket”.
