Three things to know before Alabama basketball faces McNeese State

Alabama basketball’s non-conference gauntlet gets a little tougher this week.

After surviving Arkansas State, 88-79, on Friday, the Crimson Tide return to Coleman Coliseum to welcome McNeese State for game No. 3 of the 2024-25 season.

McNeese (1-1) will be back in Tuscaloosa for the first time since November of 2001, when then-coach Mark Gottfried’s Alabama defeated the Cowboys, 90-61.

Although McNeese wasn’t ranked like Alabama (2-0), currently the No. 2 team in the country, among national polls entering the preseason, the Cowboys received 11 votes for the AP Top 25.

Alabama and McNeese tip off at 6 p.m. CT on SEC Network. Monday’s game will also be streamed on ESPN+ and Fubo, which offers a free trial.

Veterans headline starting five for McNeese State basketball

On Sunday, McNeese State listed senior guards Alyn Breed, Javohn Garcia and Brandon Murray and senior forward Christian Shumate and Joe Charles as the starting five against Alabama.

Garcia and Shumate are two of three returning double-digit scorers for the Cowboys. On McNeese’s 30-4 rout to make its first appearance in the NCAA Tournament since 2002, Shumate averaged 12.1 points and 9.5 rebounds per game in 34 starts while Garcia registered averages of 11.2 points, 3.3 rebounds and 1.7 assists per game through 32 starts.

In McNeese’s 111-57 win over Biblical Studies, Garcia dropped 21 points, just two shy of his career-best.
