The Cal State Bakersfield men’s basketball team returned to the Icardo Center court and faced a much better level of competition in North Dakota State and posted a come-from-behind 86-81 victory on Monday night.
The Roadrunners (2-1) rallied from a 45-34 halftime deficit against the Bison to win their second straight game. Last Thursday, CSUB scored the most points in a game in program history in a 22-53 win over NAIA school, Anaheim’s Bethesda University of California.
This time, CSUB had to score in bunches in the second half to get the victory. The team shot 62% in the second half, 20 of 32 shots, made 3-of-7 three-pointers after being 3 for 11 in the first half. The Runners also made 9 of 14 from the free-throw line in the second half.
Four runners finished in double figures scoring, led by Jemel Jones’ game-high 25 points on 10-of-15 shooting and five free throws in 26 minutes. Jones has been CSUB’s leading scorer in all three regular-season games. Corey Stephenson had 18 points in 22 minutes, CJ Hardy added 15 points and Marvin McGhee IV had 10.
Defensively, CSUB’s Fidelis Okereke had a team-high nine rebounds and Marvin McGhee III had seven. CSUB outrebounded the Bison 31-25.
North Dakota State (1-2) made 17 of 29 field goals in the first half and added 7 three-pointers en route to the halftime lead. In the second half, CSUB limited the Bison offensively as they only made 9 of 21 shots and only 2 of 12 three-pointers. North Dakota State did make 16 of 18 free throws in the second half to stay close.
The Bison also had four players with double-digit scoring as Jacari White had 22, Noah Feddersen had 16, Tajavis Miller scored 14 and Jacksen Moni added 10.
The Roadrunners conclude their three-game homestand with an area rivalry game against Fresno State at 6:30 p.m. Saturday. The game will feature a Teddy Bear Toss and student fans will receive a Rally for the Valley t-shirt.
