LAWRENCE — Shortly after announcing the addition of Samis Calderon on Wednesday, Kansas basketball revealed Darryn Peterson has signed with the Jayhawks.
Peterson is a 247Sports Composite five-star combo guard who’s both the No. 1 player at his position in the 2025 recruiting class and the No. 3 player overall. He’s listed at 6-foot-5 and 195 pounds. And, like Calderon, Peterson will join the Jayhawks for the 2025-26 season as a freshman.
Kansas basketball earns commitment from 2025 4-star prospect
“This is one of the best recruiting moments that Kansas basketball has had in decades,” Self said in a KU release. “Darryn is an all-around guard that scores at all levels and is also a terrific facilitator and defender. He has been well drilled and has a toughness about him being raised in a family where his brother is a successful football player at Wisconsin.”
Self continued: “Darryn was as important as any recruit we have recruited in recent memory. Coach (Kurtis) Townsend did a great job as the lead recruiter. Darryn can be a catalyst to also draw other players to our program.”
Considering the amount of talent that is set to depart Kansas’ program after the 2024-25 season, Peterson’s arrival will be a vital one for the Jayhawks. The program will have to make up for the departures of graduate center Hunter Dickinson, senior forward KJ Adams, and graduate guard Dajuan Harris Jr., as well as others. Peterson is in line for a significant role in year one.
This season, Kansas is the No. 1 team in the nation and already a winner of a pair of marquee matchups. The Jayhawks (3-0) have beaten a ranked UNC team at home and Michigan State during the Champions Classic in Atlanta. Peterson will have the opportunity to play in his fair share of high-profile matchups next season.
