Nov. 12—IOWA CITY, Iowa. — An efficient second-half offensive effort carried Iowa to a 96-77 win over the University of South Dakota men’s basketball team to close the Kenny Arnold Classic on Tuesday night at Carver-Hawkeye Arena.
Behind 64.7% (22 for 34) shooting in the final 20 minutes, the Hawkeyes put up 54 points to put distance between themselves and the Coyotes, widening the gap with a 13-0 run early in the second half. All told, Iowa led for more than 38 1/2 of the 40 minutes, with USD’s lone lead of the night coming at 1-0 on a free throw less than 30 seconds into the contest.
Josh Dix scored 23 points on 8-of-10 shooting, including 5-of-6 from 3-point range, to go with five assists and four rebounds to lead Iowa (3-0), while Seydou Traore (12 points), Payton Sandfort (12), Ladji Dembele (11) and Drew Thelwell all reached double figures in scoring, as well. Dembele also pulled down a team-high eight rebounds, as Thelwell and Brock Harding dished out six assists apiece.
Until the final minutes, Kaleb Stewart was the only Coyote in double digits for points, as he finished with a game-high 26 on 11-of-19 shooting. Isaac Bruns scored 11 points with four rebounds, while Quandre Bullock chipped in eight points, seven rebounds and three assists.
South Dakota (3-1) is back at home on Thursday night to host Dakota Wesleyan in Vermillion.
