‘Should be embarrassed’: Oregon men’s basketball survives lackluster effort to win in OT

It’ll go into the books as a double-digit victory for Oregon.

Those who witnessed the Ducks’ men’s basketball team come from behind to defeat Portland, 80-70, in overtime on Tuesday inside Matthew Knight Area know it was much closer than that.

Oregon’s late rally almost came too late.

The Ducks (3-0) trailed by 11 points with 4:46 to play but outscored the Pilots 18-7 the rest of the way, with Jadrian Tracey converting on a drive to the basket to make it 67-67 with nine seconds left in regulation.

Oregon then scored the first 11 points of the five-minute overtime session to take a 78-67 lead with 44 seconds to play.

Tracey finished with a team-high 19 points on 8-of-11 shooting. He also had five rebounds, four steals and two assists.

It was the reserve guard’s best performance of the season and one point off his career high as a Duck.

Another reserve guard, Keeshawn Barthelemy finished with 13 points and sparked Oregon with 11 points in the final 3:47 of regulation.

His back-to-back 3-pointers cut the Ducks’ deficit to 60-57 with 2:59 to play.

He made a third 3-pointer with 33 seconds left to make 67-65.

“He and (Tracey) really gave us a big boost,” Oregon coach Dana Altman said. “We needed something there.”

The win masked what was otherwise a sloppy outing for the Ducks, who played much of the game with a lack of energy and efficiency that nearly cost them a third straight win to start the season.

“I’m so happy we won the game because I would be unbelievably miserable,” Altman said. “Now I’m just miserable. Our players should be. They should be happy that we won the game but they should be embarrassed. And not because Portland’s a bad team or anything else, just the energy level we played with. We’re at home with a (veteran) team.”
