Auburn basketball’s Jahki Howard, Ja’Heim Hudson non-participants in Kent State pregame

It appears Auburn men’s basketball will be without a pair of players for a second straight game as neither Jahki Howard nor Ja’Heim Hudson warmed up ahead of the Tigers’ matchup Wednesday against Kent State, in the aftermath of their involvement in a mid-flight altercation last week.

Both Howard and Hudson were on the team bench, but neither put up a shot during pregame.

Asked Monday about their availability for the Kent State game, coach Bruce Pearl said, “It was obviously an unfortunate situation. We’re dealing with it head on. Those guys were in class and practiced on Monday.”

A team spokesperson referred to Pearl’s Monday answer when asked if the team would release a statement about the pair’s availability against the Golden Flashes.

Howard and Hudson were reportedly at the center of an incident that grounded Auburn’s travels to Texas for a game against No. 10 Houston. The crew for that Friday flight returned the plane to Auburn after what was reported as “horseplay” escalated.

Auburn Tigers forward Jahki Howard (3) celebrates his dunk during the Tipoff at Toomer’s at Toomer’s Corner at Auburn University in Auburn, Ala., on Thursday, Oct. 17, 2024.

Auburn took a flight to Houston later that night, according to an Auburn spokesperson. Neither Howard nor Hudson traveled with the team on that flight.

Neither the incident, nor the players’ absences, appeared to be a distraction, however, as the Tigers secured a top-five upset for just the third time in Pearl’s Auburn tenure, beating then-No. 4 Houston 74-69 on Saturday night.
