Loyola Marymount completes big comeback to earn OT win over USD

Nov. 13—VERMILLION, S.D. — Loyola Marymount rallied from an 18-point halftime deficit to knock off the University of South Dakota women’s basketball team 71-67 on Wednesday night at the Sanford Coyote Sports Center.

It was a tale of two halves for the Coyotes, who scored 40 points in the first half and shot 18 for 31 from the field to lead by as many as 21 points before the intermission. But in the second half, USD shot 8-for-29 from the field, including 23% in the fourth quarter, when the Coyotes were held to only eight points.

Even with the offensive struggles, USD led 59-51 with 3:29 left when Carley Duffney hit a 3-pointer. LMU then scored the next nine points, going ahead with 38 seconds left on a layup from Ali’a Matavao at 60-59. USD’s Grace Larkins tied the game at 60 with a free throw with 15 seconds left but missed a go-ahead second free throw, and LMU came up empty on the final possession of regulation to go to overtime.

The game was tied at 65 in overtime with 2:03 left before LMU’s Naudia Evans scored on a jumper and Maya Hernandez followed with a layup to put the lead at 69-65 with 47 seconds left. The Coyotes did not get closer in the final seconds, with the teams trading free throws from there.

Larkins had a team-high 29 points but took nearly half of USD’s shots in the game, finishing 14-for-31 from the field. Larkins had nine rebounds and six assists to get near a double-double. Duffney had 12 points and seven rebounds and Olivia Kieffer had 11 points and six rebounds for the Coyotes. USD was also 1-of-4 on free throws in the second half and 5-for-10 overall from the free-throw stripe in the game, which USD led for more than 38 minutes of game time.

Loyola Marymount picked up 33 points and 10 rebounds from the 6-foot forward Hernandez, while Evans logged 24 points, 10 rebounds and eight assists for the Lions (2-1).

USD (0-3) will play No. 21 Nebraska in a game at the Sanford Pentagon on Saturday, Nov. 16 in Sioux Falls, with tip-off scheduled for 7 p.m.
