Notre Dame men’s basketball makes this road swing thing look easy at Georgetown

For two hours Saturday afternoon, at a time on the calendar reserved for college football, Notre Dame men’s basketball took us all on an enjoyable time machine ride through the past.

Back to a time when that program would go into this building or that building in the Big East or the Atlantic Coast Conference and stare down any opposition and/or odds. Back to a time when it played with such confidence, such swagger that you knew it wasn’t going to board the charter flight that night without a win.

Back to a time when the Irish shared it and moved it and spaced the floor in a way that reminded everyone how beautiful this game can be when you play that way. Back to a time when it served national notice that Notre Dame basketball is good.

Back to a time when Notre Dame men’s basketball away from home meant another appearance from the “Road Dawgs.” This group’s not there yet, but Saturday showed that they may be on their way.

We remember those games, those days, those wins well.

These Irish had some bite Saturday afternoon back in a building it often owned.

Notre Dame spaced the floor and shared the ball and made shots and played with a confidence that so many previous Irish teams took into Capital One Arena in the Chinatown section of downtown D.C. It shook off early sluggishness, found scary good rhythm on offense, continued to turn the screws on defense and made this one look laughable easy.

In the best of ways.

It ended 84-63, a game the Irish led by as many as 25 points and led for the final 35:18. It was Notre Dame’s first road game this season – and its first road win. Last season, it won exactly twice away from…
