The undefeated Oregon men’s basketball team got a scare from Portland Tuesday night. Coach Dana Altman also hoped it served as a wake-up call to his veteran team.
The Ducks (3-0) overcame a double-digit deficit in the final 4:30 minutes to force overtime against before defeating the Pilots 80-70.
After the game, Altman criticized his team’s effort, shot selection and defense – three areas he wants to see improved on Sunday for Oregon’s 2 p.m. nonconference game against Troy at Matthew Knight Arena.
“We gotta change some things,” Altman said. “We gotta change some things. We can’t allow those defensive mistakes, we can’t allow to be outrebounded, we can’t be allowed to be outfought, and so, we gotta change some things. … It’s a good group, we just gotta figure some things out.”
With all that said, the Ducks have been a balanced team through three games, with nearly six players averaging in double figures and five averaging at least 4.0 rebounds.
Center Nate Bittle continues to be the leader in both categories with averages of 15.3 points and 9.7 rebounds.
Reserve guard Jadrian Tracey is averaging 13.0 points and 3.3 rebounds; starting guard TJ Bamba is averaging 12.0 and 4.0; starting forward Brandon Angel is averaging 10.3 and 4.0; starting forward Kwame Evans Jr. is averaging 10.0 and 5.7; and starting point guard Jackson Shelstad 9.7, 5.0 and 4.0 assists.
The Trojans (2-1), who are coming off a 65-49 loss at No. 18 Arkansas on Wednesday, will bring an experienced team to Matthew Knight Arena.
Among Troy’s many returning players are Myles Rigsby and Tayton Conerway, who were both named to the preseason all-Sun Belt team.
Rigsby, a sophomore forward, was the Sun Belt freshman of the year last season. Conerway, a senior guard, was the Sun Belt sixth man of the year last season.
