‘We’re learning we have great potential’: Richard’s 3-pointer at buzzer wins it for Holy Cross

PROVIDENCE, R.I. The Holy Cross men’s basketball team’s goal coming into this weekend’s College Hill Classic was to go 3-0.

The Crusaders accomplished that by defeating the University of New Hampshire in dramatic fashion Sunday afternoon at Brown University’s Pizzitola Sports Center.

Holy Cross rallied from a 13-point second-half deficit and freshman Aidan Richard buried a buzzer-beating 3 to lift the Crusaders to a 74-72 victory.

Holy Cross, which defeated Sacred Heart Friday and Brown Saturday, improved to 3-2 overall.

The last time HC had three wins in its first five games was the 2018-19 season.

“We’re learning we have great potential,” HC coach Dave Paulsen said, “and that we can play really well when we’re focused. We have a long way to go, but it’s better to teach from a win.”

HC led by two with 29 seconds left. After a UNH timeout, the Wildcats’ Davide Poser sank a 3 from the corner and UNH went up, 72-71, with 11.2 seconds to go.

The Crusaders moved the ball quickly and freshman Max Green came down with the rebound of classmate Tyler Boston’s jumper. Green, who immediately drew two defenders, kicked out to Richard, who swished the winner.

Boston had a great vantage point.

“I was under the basket,” Boston said. “I was so glad he made it. It was great to see it go in.”

Boston, who scored a team-high 18 points in the win over Brown, scored 12 points and had eight assists against the Wildcats (1-6). Richard also scored 12 points and was 4-5 from 3-point territory. Green, sophomore DeAndre Williams and senior Caleb Kenney each scored 11 points.

UNH shot 52% from the field and 58% from 3-point territory. The 72 points were the Wildcats’…
