Purdue and Marquette both in top 15 of AP top 25 basketball poll

The Boilermakers made a seven-spot leap to No. 6 in the AP poll on the strength of their home victory over then-No. 2 Alabama on Friday.

MU stayed at No. 15 in the AP poll despite a strong road win at Maryland on Friday. The Golden Eagles are ranked 14th in the USA TODAY coaches poll.

Why have Marquette and Purdue played so much recently?

The teams have met four times since the 2017-18 season.

Last season, MU and Purdue advanced to the title game of the Maui Invitational in Honolulu and the Boilermakers pulled out a thrilling victory.

Purdue won in November 2023 at Mackey Arena as part of the now-defunct Gavitt Games that pitted Big East and Big Ten teams against each other. The teams also met in the Gavitt Games in Nov. 2017 (won by Purdue) and November 2019 (won by MU).

Tuesday’s game is the first of a home-and-home agreement, so next season the teams will play in West Lafayette, Indiana.

Guards: Braden Smith, Fletcher Loyer, Gicarri Harris

Marquette-Purdue prediction

The Golden Eagles are 5.5-point favorites according to BetMGM.com, a number that indicates how well MU plays at home (14-2 at Fiserv Forum last season). The guess here is that a raucous student section will spur the Golden Eagles to another big non-conference victory.
