Tennessee basketball’s Cam Carr will miss 4 to 6 weeks with left thumb injury

Cam Carr will miss four to six weeks with a left thumb injury suffered in Tennessee basketball’s win against Austin Peay on Sunday.

The sophomore guard did not practice Tuesday before the Vols left for the Bahamas, where they play a pair of games Thursday and Friday.

No. 9 Tennessee (4-0) plays its first game of the Baha Mar Championship against Virginia (3-0) on Thursday (9:30 p.m. ET, CBS Sports Network). UT faces either No. 15 Baylor (3-1) or No. 21 St. John’s (4-0) on Friday in its second game in the tournament in Nassau, the Bahamas.

Cam Carr to miss 4 to 6 weeks with left thumb injury

Carr was injured with 7:10 to play against Austin Peay on Sunday. He tumbled to the court when he was fouled by Govs guard LJ Thomas. He grabbed his left thumb and wrist as his teammates helped him up.

The 6-foot-6 Carr hit one of the two free throws before checking out of the game. He did not return.

He is averaging 4.8 points in 10.5 minutes per game. He had four points Sunday.

Carr could miss the remainder of Tennessee’s nonconference schedule with the thumb injury. His loss is a hit to UT’s guard rotation, but the Vols have a proven group of guards in seniors Jordan Gainey, Chaz Lanier, Jahmai Mashack and Zakai Zeigler. All four play at least 25.5 minutes per game.

Carr’s absence does affect UT’s overall depth, which is already in an interesting spot. The Vols have 11 scholarship players. UT is down to 10 active scholarship players without Carr and could be down to nine if forward J.P. Estrella’s left foot injury continues to be an issue.

The sophomore has battled the foot injury since the offseason. He worked on the side during UT’s practice Tuesday at Pratt Pavilion.
