Darlinstone Dubar returns for Tennessee basketball vs Virginia after missing four games

Darlinstone Dubar returned for Tennessee basketball against Virginia on Thursday in the Bahamas.

The Vols senior guard checked in at the 15-minute mark and immediately scored on a putback dunk on the first offensive possession.

The Vols senior guard missed the first four games while dealing with a personal matter. His regular-season debut comes at a good time for Tennessee, which is without guard Cam Carr and forward J.P. Estrella due to injury. Carr is out four to six weeks due to a left thumb injury and Estrella has been ruled out for the Baha Mar Championship.

No. 9 Tennessee (4-0) is playing its first game of the Baha Mar Championship against Virginia (3-0) on Thursday (9:30 p.m. ET, CBS Sports Network). UT faces either No. 15 Baylor (3-1) or No. 21 St. John’s (4-0) on Friday in its second game in the tournament in Nassau, the Bahamas.

Darlinstone Dubar returns to Tennessee in Baha Mar Championship

Dubar has been working toward his return for the past 10 days. The 6-foot-6, 220-pound guard started practicing again on Nov. 11, two days after he traveled with the Vols to Louisville for Tennessee’s 77-55 win on Nov. 9.

The Hofstra transfer was a full participant during practice Tuesday.

Coach Rick Barnes said after UT’s season-opening 80-64 win against Gardner-Webb that Dubar’s return timeline is up to the player. Barnes simply wants to make sure that Dubar feels supported as he handles the personal matter.

“We just want to make sure that he knows we are there for him and everyone around has been,” Barnes said. “Tough time for him just personally. I think he has dealt with it for a while. Love him to death and we just miss him. It is up to him. It is all on his time.”
