LEXINGTON — When asked whether he believed in “momentum,” Kentucky basketball coach Mark Pope admitted it “probably” existed.

That’s how he concluded his answer.

Before that, the Wildcats’ leader spoke at length about how he’s a dyed-in-the-wool believer in “the dynamic nature” of basketball.

“One of the interesting things about analytics — and just numbers and just data in general — is that it’s getting you averages,” Pope said Thursday. “And those averages matter. But in the course of a rotation or a game or a final minute of a game — or anything like that — sometimes the numbers aren’t that helpful, because you’d like to have some brilliant moments in that moment or in that game. You’re not looking for the averages.”

Even if such a take might upset his staff devoted to the study of advanced basketball analytics.

“I do think that we’re dealing with beautiful, emotional human beings,” Pope said, “and hopefully, we have some native insights into that that maybe could be — the numbers could be negligent of, not over the whole spectrum of time, but just in that specific moment.”

Pope will put his theory to the test again tonight, as he tries to begin his tenure 5-0 as No. 11 UK hosts Jackson State at Rupp Arena.
