Blockbuster NBA Trade: Luka Doncic Heads to Lakers as Mavericks Welcome Anthony Davis in Historic Swap

In an unexpected development, the Dallas Mavericks are trading Luka Doncic to the Los Angeles Lakers in exchange for Anthony Davis, as reported by ESPN’s Shams Charania.

The official announcement came later on Sunday.

According to the Mavericks, “The Dallas Mavericks have confirmed today that they have acquired 10-time All-Star Anthony Davis, guard Max Christie, and a first-round pick in 2029 from the Los Angeles Lakers in return for guard Luka Doncic, forward/center Maxi Kleber, and forward/center Markieff Morris. In a related three-team trade, the Utah Jazz will receive guard Jalen Hood-Schifino and a 2025 second-round pick from Los Angeles, as well as a 2025 second-round pick from Dallas.”

It has been reported that the Mavericks initiated discussions with the Lakers, proposing Doncic for consideration. The Lakers’ management assessed the opportunity and determined that the 25-year-old Doncic could serve as the cornerstone of their franchise for the next decade, while Davis offers an immediate competitive advantage for the Mavericks.

Mavericks general manager Nico Harrison is anticipated to speak with the team prior to Sunday’s matchup against the Cleveland Cavaliers to clarify the details of the trade, sources informed The Athletic.

Hoopshype indicates that this marks the first in-season trade in NBA history where a player selected to the All-NBA First Team is exchanged for a player named to the All-NBA Second Team.

Following the trade to the Lakers, Doncic will no longer be able to sign a supermax contract this summer and will only be eligible for a 30 percent cap extension starting in the 2026-27 season, according to John Hollinger.
