Curry and Kerr Reflect on Durants Decision to Stay with Suns, Shunning Warriors Reunion

Kevin Durant effectively halted discussions between the Phoenix Suns and the Golden State Warriors as the recent trade deadline approached, ensuring players’ eligibility for the 2025 NBA Playoffs remained intact.

The veteran forward’s apparent decision to decline a return to the Bay Area franchise was corroborated by his former teammate Stephen Curry and Warriors head coach Steve Kerr, both of whom elaborated on Durant’s lack of interest.

“You need everyone fully committed regardless of past connections,” the 36-year-old point guard told ESPN’s Ohm Youngmisuk. “I have great respect for KD. It’s about finding peace and happiness. None of us had control over that scenario. The most important thing is making sure someone genuinely wants to be in a place. Beyond that, I’m not here to persuade anyone to stay where they don’t wish to be.”

Durant, who is 36, had a memorable stint with the Warriors, highlighted by winning NBA championships and earning Finals MVP awards in 2016 and 2017 while playing under Kerr’s leadership.

“I can’t fault Kevin at all for not wanting to relive that experience. He faced so much negativity for, people saying, ‘Oh, you’re just joining a powerhouse.’ Then he goes on to be Finals MVP two consecutive years, and still faces criticism,” the successful coach remarked. “So why would he want to deal with that nonsense again?”

Now, staying with the Suns past the trade deadline, Durant is aiming for his 14th postseason appearance. During the 2024-25 Regular Season, he has averaged 27.3 points per game over 41 matches.
