In the most recent NBA matchup, the Milwaukee Bucks faced off against the Memphis Grizzlies and ultimately fell short, even with Giannis Antetokounmpo delivering a standout performance that included 30 points and 11 rebounds.
However, the game itself was eclipsed by a more captivating subject during the post-game press conference. According to Eric Nehm, a writer for The Athletic covering the Bucks, Giannis provided some intriguing insights when asked about Luka Doncic’s rumored move to the Los Angeles Lakers. His initial response was, “I thought it was just fake news. It’s crazy.”
Giannis elaborated, saying, “I’ve played against Luka multiple times, along with AD [Anthony Davis] and all the players involved in the trade. This is the reality of our industry. It’s a business, and we must accept that no one is secure in their position. Everyone recognizes that he is among the league’s elite players.”
He continued, “Ultimately, as I have mentioned before, you are assessed every single day. You should never take anything for granted. Being an All-Star is not something you assume as a given, nor should you take lightly the chance to don your jersey and represent your team, or to represent your family in front of the world.”
“I cherish every moment I’m on the court during an NBA game; I strive to play with enthusiasm. At the same time, I am aware of the business side of basketball, where sometimes franchises need to make decisions that benefit their organization, positioning, and their quest for excellence and championships. However, it is a two-way street,” he went on to explain.
Giannis emphasized that there should be no “double standards” when discussing the business of the NBA. “When a player thinks they have a better chance at winning a championship with another team, we shouldn’t lambast them for lacking loyalty or for letting anyone down. History tells us that you must prioritize what’s best for you and your family,” he noted.
In the end, he shared an exciting vision involving European players, sparking conversation. “Let me put forth something humorous because I voiced it seriously. Now that a European player is set to become, I believe, the face of the Lakers, this marks a new era for Europe. It’s unprecedented. We’ve had Pau Gasol, who was undoubtedly a great talent, but this moment feels different,” he said regarding Doncic’s potential move.
“What’s my wish? I want Luka to join the Lakers, and Jokic to the Knicks. I dream of all the European stars heading to major markets, creating something extraordinary. That is my aspiration. Nonetheless, I wish both teams, and all players, the very best on their journeys ahead,” Giannis Antetokounmpo concluded.
