Dennis Smith Jr. aims to restart his NBA career following his departure from Real Madrid, targeting a return during the latter portion of the 2024-25 Regular Season.
The 27-year-old guard had already been linked to an exit from the Spanish club and has now expressed his desire to make a comeback to the NBA this season, according to prominent NBA insider Chris Haynes.
Selected ninth overall in the 2017 draft from North Carolina State, Smith has played 326 games in the NBA, representing teams such as the New York Knicks, Dallas Mavericks, Brooklyn Nets, Charlotte Hornets, Portland Trail Blazers, and Detroit Pistons. His most recent outing was with the Nets toward the end of the 2023-24 Regular Season.
Venturing abroad, he signed with Madrid in January. However, just over a month later, he is poised to leave the renowned club after averaging 4.0 points, 1.5 rebounds, and 0.5 assists per game over two appearances in the Turkish Airlines EuroLeague, along with 1.5 points, 1.0 assists, and 0.5 rebounds per game in two matchups in Spain’s Liga Endesa.
Although there have been numerous speculations about his next move from both sides of the Atlantic, his potential NBA destination remains uncertain. Nevertheless, Smith can engage with any team as an unrestricted free agent, assuming he is released from his current contract with the Madrid-based team. If he secures a new signing, he would be eligible to participate in the Regular Season and could also join a playoff contender for the postseason.
