Health Concerns Prompt Lakers to Abort Mark Williams Trade, Hornets Reclaim Center as Season Progresses

The Los Angeles Lakers have officially cancelled their trade for Charlotte Hornets center Mark Williams.

While the Lakers have not provided specific reasons for the cancellation, ESPN has reported that Williams did not pass the physical examination, which revealed “multiple issues.” These reported concerns are said to be unrelated to a previous back injury that sidelined him for the season due to a concussion in December 2023.

Initially, the Lakers had planned to send Dalton Knecht, Cam Reddish, a 2030 pick swap, and a 2031 first-round pick in exchange for Williams, aiming to enhance their frontcourt.

Though Williams will not don the Lakers’ uniform, the Hornets have expressed their enthusiasm for his return in an official statement.

“After the other team showed strong interest in Mark, we made the tough choice to trade him,” the Hornets remarked. “We have always respected his talent, commitment, and character. We are excited to welcome him back as a dynamic force at the starting center position. His return will bolster our roster, and we anticipate the positive contributions he will bring both on and off the court.”

So far in the 2024-25 season, Williams is averaging 15.6 points, 9.6 rebounds, 2.5 assists, and 1.3 blocks per game.
