New Wave of Big Men: Sabonis Celebrates Unlikely Three-Point Supremacy Over NBA’s Traditional Shooters

The trend of big men aiming for three-point shots is not a new phenomenon in the ongoing transformation of basketball. However, the fact that Domantas Sabonis and Nikola Jokic have outperformed traditional sharpshooters in accuracy during the 2024-25 NBA Regular Season is indeed remarkable.

Currently, the Lithuanian forward for the Sacramento Kings holds the top position in the league, boasting an impressive 48.5% shooting percentage from beyond the arc. Following an impressive showing where he sank 7 out of 11 three-point attempts against the Charlotte Hornets on Wednesday, Luke Kennard of the Memphis Grizzlies has raised his season percentage to 47.9%, placing him in second, just ahead of Jokic, who is shooting 47.5% this season with the Denver Nuggets.

“Yeah. It’s really surprising,” Sabonis remarked about their notable rankings after a victorious game against the Golden State Warriors at the Golden 1 Center on Wednesday.

As the Kings embark on a six-game road trip that extends into early February, they are set to face off against the reigning MVP and the Nuggets in Ball Arena on Thursday.

“This is going to be another significant matchup, going up against the MVP and a formidable team. They’re on a roll right now. It’s going to be a tough battle. Our past encounters with Denver have always been intense. This one won’t be an easy task,” Sabonis noted.

With a record of 23-20, the Kings are currently just one game shy of breaking into the top six in the Western Conference standings, which would secure them a direct path to the 2025 Playoffs. Meanwhile, the Nuggets hold the fourth position with a 27-16 record.
