Dirk Nowitzki, the legendary figure of the Dallas Mavericks, expressed his disbelief upon learning about the team’s decision to trade Luka Doncic to the Los Angeles Lakers.
“It’s a really difficult situation for me,” Nowitzki revealed during an interview with 96.7 The Ticket. “I was just as taken aback and surprised as everyone else. It was hard to wrap my head around it.”
Doncic joined the Mavericks from Real Madrid and the EuroLeague in 2018. Although he played only one season alongside Nowitzki before the German star’s retirement in 2019, they quickly established a close friendship.
As Doncic prepared to play his first game with the Lakers, he reached out to Nowitzki, inviting him to attend.
“We exchanged some messages, and I felt a bit let down and sad for him. Clearly, he didn’t see this coming,” Nowitzki explained. “So he asked me to be there for his inaugural game in L.A., and I felt it was important to support him.”
While Nowitzki will remain loyal to his beloved Mavericks and won’t support other NBA franchises, he will always cheer for his friend Luka.
“At the end of the day, I can never be a fan of the Lakers, but I will always be a fan of Luka,” Nowitzki remarked.
