Popovichs Future in Doubt: Spurs Coach Likely Out for the Season Amid Health Concerns

As reported by ESPN’s Shams Charania, renowned coach Gregg Popovich is unlikely to return to the San Antonio Spurs‘ sideline this season.

His future in the NBA remains unclear as he continues to recuperate from a stroke he experienced in November.

The Spurs have also recently lost Victor Wembanyama for the remainder of the season due to deep vein thrombosis in his right shoulder.

Popovich and Wembanyama have reportedly maintained a close relationship in the last few days, with the all-time winningest coach in NBA history actively offering guidance following the French player’s diagnosis.

Following what was initially described as a “mild stroke,” the Spurs elevated assistant coach Mitch Johnson to the interim head coaching position, where he has recorded a 21-27 overall record.

Having coached the Spurs since the 1996-97 season, Popovich celebrated his 76th birthday in January. In 2020, he broke the record previously held by Hubie Brown, who was 71 when he last took the court as head coach of the Memphis Grizzlies.
