As Jamahl Mosley, head coach of the Orlando Magic, heads to the Kia Center for a matchup against the Washington Wizards on NBA Sunday, he reminisces about his time as an assistant coach with the Dallas Mavericks alongside Luka Doncic.
During a pregame press conference, the 46-year-old Milwaukee native was asked by Ryan Kaminski to reflect on Doncic’s desire to hone his skills during their shared time in Dallas.
“When he first entered the league, I remember the countless nights we spent in the gym, engaging in one-on-one games with Dorian Finney-Smith and Dennis Smith Jr. It was all about playing basketball, competing, and refining his shot,” Mosley responded.
Regarding his insight into Doncic’s recent developments, he stated, “I can’t speak on that since I haven’t been a part of it for four years,” referring to the conclusion of his tenure with the Mavericks in 2021 before taking on the head coaching role with the Magic. “My focus is solely on what we aim to achieve.”
Concerns about Doncic’s focus in various aspects—particularly his work ethic—have been highlighted as key factors leading to the Mavericks’ decision to trade him to the Los Angeles Lakers on February 2.
Reflecting on his experiences with Doncic, Mosley stated, “I remember him being committed to working hard consistently because he has a genuine passion for basketball. When you truly love the game, you put in the effort.”
Coincidentally, Doncic is poised to confront his former team when the Lakers host the Mavericks at crypto.com Arena on Tuesday.
