Vasilije Micic: Embracing the Challenge of the NBA While Keeping European Dreams Alive

Vasilije Micic, the Serbian point guard and former EuroLeague MVP, is still anticipating his first game with the Phoenix Suns, his new NBA team.

Having previously played for the Oklahoma City Thunder and Charlotte Hornets, Micic now finds himself in Arizona, joining stars such as Kevin Durant, Devin Booker, and Bradley Beal.

“I am feeling great. This city is amazing, and the organization is top-notch. However, I always find joy in playing. At this moment, I need to acclimate to my surroundings—I’m among exceptional players who have a familiarity with one another, some having played together for six months and others for two to three years. Therefore, I must accept this situation, embrace it, and remain prepared. That’s my focus for now,” Micic shared with Mundo Deportivo.

He believes he has done his part effectively.

“To be honest, I feel I’ve contributed sufficiently. Given the chances I’ve had, I’ve done my share. I think any player can establish their rhythm and make an impact in a short span. But overall, I’m content—satisfied with what I’ve displayed thus far.”

Despite facing challenges in securing playing time as a former EuroLeague champion and MVP, Micic asserts he doesn’t feel unappreciated in the NBA.

“No, not at all. I genuinely don’t mind. I always say that my accomplishments in Europe resulted from numerous factors—many things are beyond one’s control. I’ve faced skepticism before in Europe during my youth. Therefore, I believe that my daily dedication, hard work, and passion for the game have opened doors for me in Europe. I didn’t achieve it independently; it was a team effort with the fantastic squad I had at Efes. The principle remains the same here. I don’t expect anyone to treat me like a star; however, I firmly believe I’ve demonstrated enough to earn respect from everyone. Thus, I don’t feel overlooked.”

Micic downplays any added pressure stemming from his NBA contract expiration this summer.

“Honestly, I do not feel pressured. Like I said, I’ve set high expectations for myself. But at this point, I believe anything is possible, and once the season wraps up, I’ll evaluate what option works best for me and will embrace it.”

When asked about the possibility of returning to Europe to join Barcelona someday, he remarked, “Absolutely, any team could be a possibility. There are several teams in Europe that I hold in high regard. That being said, my current focus is on the Suns and what we are building here, and I’m eager to finish the season on a strong note. We’ll see what summer brings.”

Toronto Raptors head coach and fellow Serbian Darko Rajakovic also weighed in on Micic’s prospects.

“I believe he’s an exceptional talent with considerable experience, a player who knows how to win and has contributed to the Serbian national team’s success in European Championships and World Cups (e.g., the silver in 2023). I genuinely think that joining the NBA later in your career presents challenges. The game itself remains basketball, but European and NBA styles are quite distinct. There are various rules, organizational nuances, and travel demands that one must navigate and adapt to,” Rajakovic explained. “I am confident he will find his footing in the NBA and continue to thrive in his career here.”
